Short Background:
Grell is a shinigami, or a grim reaper, if we want to stick to the timeline that Kuroshitsuji is set in. While on a mission in 19th century London, he accidentally came across a murder committed by his target, Madame Red. In return for his silence over whatever he had witnessed and for not killing her, Grell made a pact with the lady, promising to help her cover up for any murders she would commit so long as she made them as gruesome as possible, if only for his own sick enjoyment. This then sparked off a series of shocking murders which was later known as the Jack the Ripper affair. Grell had also posed as her butler, taking on the persona of one who was weak-minded, cowardly and clumsy, if only to keep attention away from himself. He was later punished by William, a member of the Grim Reaper Council, for delaying his mission, bending the rules for Madame Red and causing unnecessary deaths in London.
